He took functional form as his point of departure though he approached it from another angle, subsequently giving it a more expressive and sculptural character. Tjok Dessauvage was very much aware that the pot is a great deal more than just a mere functional item. He wanted to develop this idea. He started his ceramics studies under Joost Maréchal (1911-1971) at Saint-Lucas in Ghent, Belgium. But when Maréchal died two years later, Dessauvage stopped his studies prematurely. Dessauvage's work employs a basic range of forms, he considers his pot shapes; cylinders, hemispheres or cones as bearers of decoration. The pots are fired as Raku and burnished. Shape and finish are immaculate; the decoration is austere and meditative. For a foundation he uses black and orange clay and various techniques for decoration. This consists of colour, scored lines, holes, gold, porcelain, bone and sometimes surface treatment of the pot by local heating. These contemporary and simplistic ceramics have gained Tjok recognition from all over the world and he has had numerous exhibitions displaying these elegant pieces of art.
