Hein Severijns was born 1936 in the small Dutch village of Reuver. He was trained at the Academy of Applied Art in Maastricht, The Netherlands, and the Ingenieur und Werkkunstschule in Höht-Grenzhasuen in Germany. For many years he combined his work as an artist with a job as a thecnologist and designer in the ceramic industry. His expertise is widely appreciated and respected all over the world.

Hein Severijns vases are reminiscent of works of classical art. In shape they resemble the subtle vases of the ancient Greek, while the almost transparent patina of the porcelain reminds us of glasswork. The vases are clearly the works of a great craftman, who, in his many years of experience; has managed to gain perfect control over the materials he uses.

The wheel thrown vases are made from porcelain clay from Limoges, which is fired unglazed in a kiln. The product, known as “biscuit”  is the glazed and fired at 1300°C several times over. It is after the final firing that the vases acquire their typical patina, the result of crystallisation caused by slow cooling of the glaze. The beautiful colours the artist obtains buy suing complex metal silicates.
