Lucien Petit is a French sculptor. Along with architects, he shares the ambition to build, bringing hospital forms out of the ground. His own forms rise up with no agenda to match. They stand, sometimes taking their lines from their habitat, no matter how rustic it may be. So they harbour a breath. Each time, an idea finds refuge in a space, lodging itself inside. Well-built statues provide asylum. Like a temple, every work functions as a tangible receptacle to contain that which is not.
Ark 38 is a design store for high-end furniture and decorative objects.
Architecture meets design
Over the course of time, this former weaving mill and subsequent Tupperware warehouse was preserved in its original form and even during refurbishments the original elements were retained. New apertures were made into the facade with its brick ornaments and enormous concrete “curved” frames, which are both constructive and designed to draw your eye to the brick architecture in the facade, were poured in situ.
A huge, round, concrete structure floats through the former factory hall, balancing on a mere few parabolic supports. Creating space with low and high ceilings. Brutalist architecture versus delicate design.
ark 38 was founded in 2018 by Hans and Stijn Sterck, managers of Sterck nv.
Passionate about all things beautiful, Hans, in collaboration with Objekt architects, converted a former weaving mill (and subsequently a disused Tupperware warehouse) into a space dedicated to architecture and design.
